STATEMENT ON KANU PARTY ON THE FINANCE BILL 2024
As its general knowledge, the Finance and Planning Committee of the National Assembly
retreated and drafted its report after a comprehensive public participation exercise on the
Finance Bill, 2024. The Bill will be tabled before the National Assembly tomorrow,
Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
However, the Bill has elicited sharp reactions and vehement opposition from economic
experts, think tanks, and the general public for its punitive taxation proposals. Even with
the proposed amendments, the Bill will still overburden the taxpayer.
Therefore, as a parliamentary party in the opposition under the auspices of Azimio, KANU
is bound by the constitution and public interest to hold the government to account to ensure
its policies are responsive to the needs of Kenyans and the economic realities of the nation.
It is imperative on the part of our Members of Parliament to uphold this obligation through
their representation and oversight roles to cushion Kenyans against any further aggressive
economic policies.
Therefore, KANU wishes to reaffirm its position to oppose the Finance Bill, 2024 in its
entirety and urge its legislators to vote against the said Bill.
