KANU Champions Devolution and Grassroots Empowerment During High-Level Wajir County Engagement
Reaffirming its commitment to decentralized governance and local empowerment, the Kenya African National Union (KANU) has reiterated its call for a stronger devolution framework, advocating for an increase in the equitable share allocation to counties to at least 35%.
The party maintains that devolution remains the primary engine for sustainable grassroots development, granting communities direct agency over their local priorities, infrastructure, and socio-economic destiny.
To demonstrate this commitment on the ground, a high-level party delegation recently paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Governor of Wajir County, H.E. Ahmed Muhumed Abdi, at the county headquarters. The delegation was led by KANU Executive Director Mercy Wanyeki, alongside Hon. Yussuf Mohammed (MCA), Hon. Umulkaltuma Abdisalan (MCA), and Ms. Elizabeth Shamba.
The consultative meeting centered on strengthening intergovernmental collaboration, bolstering county-led development initiatives, and addressing key priorities affecting the Northern Kenya region.
The outreach aligns with KANU’s broader nationwide strategy to consolidate its grassroots footprint, deepen community engagements, and mobilize regional networks ahead of the next General Election. By engaging directly with county leadership and local representatives, the party continues to build strong alliances and champion fiscal decentralization that directly benefits citizens at the ward and village levels.
Under the leadership of its national secretariat, KANU continues to ramp up its county-level engagements across the country, ensuring that the party’s grassroots machinery remains energized, policy-driven, and firmly positioned to drive the national governance agenda.
