Hon. Naisula Lesuuda Champions Safer Roads for All Kenyans

For decades, Kenya’s road infrastructure has largely been designed with motorists in mind, often overlooking the needs of pedestrians and cyclists who rely on non-motorized transport every day. As a result, many road users have been forced to navigate unsafe conditions, exposing them to unnecessary risks and limiting accessibility.

Recognizing this challenge, KANU Samburu West MP Hon. Naisula Lesuuda is championing a transformative approach to road development through proposals contained in the Kenya Roads (Amendment) Bill. The proposed legislation seeks to ensure that all road users are considered in the planning, construction, and upgrading of road infrastructure across the country.

The Bill proposes to make it mandatory for all new roads, as well as roads undergoing repair, rehabilitation, or upgrading, to incorporate safe, accessible, and designated infrastructure for non-motorized transport. This includes the construction of dedicated cycling lanes, safe pedestrian walkways, and clearly marked pedestrian crossings.

The proposed reforms represent a significant step toward creating a more inclusive transport system that accommodates the needs of every Kenyan, regardless of their preferred mode of travel. For the millions of people who walk or cycle to work, school, markets, and other essential services, these measures could greatly improve safety, convenience, and mobility.

Beyond improving road safety, the proposals are expected to promote healthy lifestyles, reduce traffic congestion, and support environmentally sustainable modes of transport. By encouraging walking and cycling through the provision of proper infrastructure, Kenya can move closer to building greener, more livable communities.

Hon. Lesuuda’s initiative demonstrates a commitment to addressing the long-standing challenges faced by pedestrians and cyclists while advancing a vision of transport infrastructure that serves everyone equally. Her proposals underscore the importance of designing roads that prioritize safety, accessibility, and inclusivity from the outset.

Once enacted into law, the Kenya Roads (Amendment) Bill will mark a major milestone in the country’s transport sector. It will help guarantee that safe mobility is not a privilege for a few but a fundamental right for every road user.

The proposals reflect a forward-looking vision for Kenya’s future, where roads are built not only for vehicles but for people, ensuring safer journeys and better quality of life for communities across the nation. Through this initiative, Hon. Naisula Lesuuda continues to champion meaningful reforms that place the welfare and safety of citizens at the heart of national development.
