GREENING KENYA: Environment and Climate
Change
PRIORITY 4
Climate change has significant adverse effects on the Kenyan
economy. The share of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by
the environment and natural resources sector was up by 4.0 %, up
from 3.7 % recorded in the previous year (Economic Survey, 2021).
Kenya’s total value of mineral production declined by 5.8 %, from 24.1 billion in 2019 to 22.7 billion in
2020. Total forest area increased marginally from 4,228.8 thousand hectares in 2019 to 4,231.9
thousand hectares in 2020. The area under government forest plantation stock increased from 147.6
thousand hectares in 2019 to 149.6 thousand hectares (Economic Survey, 2021). As a signatory to the
Paris Climate Change Agreement of 2016, Kenya committed to reducing carbon emissions by
promoting green transport or e-mobility and the State Department for Transport has prioritized the
uptake of electric mobility (Economic Survey, 2021).

Our Vision
With the growing evidence of the impacts of climate change that can significantly inhibit sustainable
development, we are committed to ‘Greening Kenya’ for a healthy environment and restored nature.
We envision a country that prioritizes sustainable utilization of natural resources to enhance climate
resilience and adaptive capacity that protects and encourages environmental conservation to our
natural resource base.
Our Plan
Through extensive global and regional engagement, we will recognize the imperative of a
transboundary approach to environmental protection, climate change response in addition to
initiatives at the national, county, and local levels by mitigating the potential impacts at all sectors and
exploring the opportunities that come with environmental conversation practices for the benefit of all
Kenyans.
