KANU MANIFESTO 2022-2027

                Blue Economy
           AGENDA 1 Our Vision

It is our vision to establish a blue economy model that sustainably exploits the underutilized marine
resources to create employment opportunities in the coastal region, social equity and economic
growth while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.

                Our Plan
Given the underutilized ‘blue’ resources that currently exist, we plan to embark on the realization of
the full potential of the blue economy through the inclusion and participation of all stakeholders
and sectors. In addition to market opportunities, we plan to protect and develop more intangible
‘blue’ resources such as traditional ways of life, carbon sequestration, and marine resilience to help
vulnerable regions mitigate the often devastating effects of climate change.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Blue Economy

In the next five years, we will:
Set aside Ksh 100 billion annually to protect corals, reefs, and marine areas from environmental
                    exploitation.
Adopt modern technology to protect the marine ecosystem by spatial mapping, acquisition of
de-pollution machinery, and hindrance from illegal fishing in our water bodies.
Establish modern fish processing plants at the Coast, Nyanza, Baringo, Naivasha, and Turkan
regions, to promote cottage industries and create local job opportunities around fish products
in the coastal and lake regions.
Establish a marine tourism directorate in the relevant ministry to package and regulate aquatic
sports and activities such as cruise ships, sport fishing, deep-sea diving, game safaris, marina,
dolphin, and whale watching as world-class tourist attractions that create job opportunities.
Improve Kenya’s per capita consumption of fish, through incentivization, from the current 4.5
kg/person/year to 9 kg/person/year with a view of attaining the global average of 20 kg/ person
per year. This will accrue benefits of a fish diet, enhance job opportunities and boost economic
                    growth.
Continuously equip our fishers under the Exclusive Economic Zones to fish up to the allowed
200 nautical miles from the shore instead of the current five nautical miles.
