KANU MANIFESTO 2022-2027
Hotel and Tourism
AGENDA 1 Our Vision
Tourism in Kenya accounts for about 8.8 % of the GDP (Ministry of Tourism, 2019). It is vital for
human development because of its potential to reduce poverty, create employment opportunities
and generate foreign exchange. The tourism sector indicators registered declines, with tourism
earnings decreasing by 43.9 % to Ksh 91.7 billion in 2020. The falls were attributed to the COVID-19
pandemic (Economic Survey, 2021).
Our vision is to diversify our tourism portfolio by removing the over-dependence on traditional
safari, increasing our investment in tourism, and adopting new circuit frontiers that will market
Kenya as a preferred tourism and business event destination.
Our Plan
We plan to increase our investment in hotel and tourism infrastructure, upskilling and training
tourism professionals, introduce tourism safety initiatives, enhance the visitor experience, manage
destinations, and improve the tourism regulatory environment that can guarantee sustainability in
the hotel and tourism industry.
Our Commitment to Sustainable Hospitality and Tourism
In the next five years, we will:
In collaboration with County governments, review and establish a revenue-sharing formula that
will enable the local communities to take ownership of all the tourist activities found within
those counties.
Enhance the tourism circuits, in collaboration with the counties, to ensure that every part of the
country optimally benefits from the locally available tourist attraction potential.
Encourage the establishment of local Ecotourism Societies within the tourism regions to
promote responsible travel that conserves the natural environment and respects local cultures.
Heavily combat all forms of insecurity and terrorism all over Kenya to attract tourism activities
and position Kenya as the leading tourists' destination.
As part of government policy, introduce low-cost holiday family packages for the locals to
encourage domestic tourism.
Increase the Tourism Promotion Fund by at least 20% to improve Kenya's tourism development,
promotion, and branding.
Promote health and medical tourism, sports tourism, and residential tourism as vibrant socio-
economic sub-sector of the sustainable economy in Kenya.
Ensure accessible infrastructure in all our touristic sites by expanding roads and upgrading our
airports and airstrips to encourage visits.
